Former Australian opener Phil Jaques sacked as NSW manager after the state’s worst start to the Sheffield Shield season in 14 years. A review was already scheduled during the Big Bash League’s hiatus at the start of the campaign, but officials stepped up the proceedings with an important meeting early Tuesday.

Just after 9am, Jaques stepped down, announcing that senior coach Greg Shipperd would take over on a temporary basis for the remainder of the season. The move comes after NSW failed to win a match in their first five Shield matches, while also finishing last on the one-day ladder with just one win out of five.

Jaques played 11 Tests for Australia and completed 902 laps in his short international career. He retired from Australian first-class cricket in 2012 to move abroad and qualify for the English Championship.

Jaques continued strong, averaging 44 points in 792 Championship runs. He retired from County cricket at the age of 35, which saw him join the NSW Blues as an assistant coach.

He eventually took over a NSW side heavily influenced by the Australian election and a list of notable injuries. However, the cast also includes famous stars such as Moises Henriques, Sean Abbott and Kurtis Patterson.

Despite a grim start to the season, Jaques led NSW to a Sheffield Shield title in his second season in charge of the Blues in 2019-20 and a one-day title the following year. However, his contract was up this season, and the dreadful start almost determined his fate.

NSW part ways with Phil Jaques

In a statement, the NSW Blues praised Jaques’ contribution to the state team, both as a player and as a manager.

“On behalf of everyone at Cricket NSW, I want to thank Phil for his contribution to cricket in NSW as both a player and coach,” said Greg Mail, head of performance. «Phil is an extremely passionate NSW person and has given all his time as a head coach, but we think now is the right time to make a change. We wish Phil all the best in his future endeavors.»

The change comes just two days after NSW’s last Shield match before the BBL break, and the Blues will face Victoria in Melbourne on Thursday. Shipperd also works with a few players as the Sydney Sixers BBL coach, bringing at least some continuity.

During his 23 years in charge of Tasmania and Victoria, he has won five Shield titles and has one of the most impressive coaching records in Australian domestic cricket.

“Greg Shipperd’s cricket acumen and coaching record are well-known,” the Mail said. «And we are delighted that he has agreed to guide our Blues program as we take the time to understand our next move. He has existing relationships with many of the players and staff and I expect him to move into the group starting this week.» The match against Victoria will be smooth.»
